This mounting plate for hornet traps was specially developed for building your own trap against the Asian hornet (Vespa velutina). The yellow capture plate can be easily installed in a suitable plastic canister, bucket, container or its lid, allowing you to build a sturdy, reusable trapping device.

Thanks to the combination of a large entrance cone with a 9.5 mm opening and numerous 5.2 mm exit openings, the design is intended for the most selective use possible: Asian hornets can easily fly into or crawl into the cone, while smaller insects can escape from the trap container again through the narrower openings.

Specially designed for the Asian hornet – Vespa velutina

The Asian hornet is becoming an increasing challenge, especially for beekeeping operations. Worker hornets may gather in front of apiaries and prey on honey bees there.

With this capture plate, an existing plastic container can quickly be turned into a hornet trap for use at the apiary, in the garden or around apiaries.

The advantage: instead of a complete special-purpose container, an existing canister or plastic bucket can be reused.

Well-designed entry principle

At the center of the plate is an inward-facing capture cone.

The opening at the end of the cone measures approx. 9.5 mm. This allows Asian hornets to enter the container easily:

• fly in
• crawl in
• follow the attractant into the trap container

The funnel-shaped design then makes a direct return route much more difficult.

5.2 mm exit openings for smaller insects

The capture plate also has numerous narrow openings measuring approx. 5.2 mm.

These openings are deliberately made smaller than the central hornet entrance. Smaller insects that accidentally enter the trap can fly back out of the container through them, while larger Asian hornets remain inside the trap container.

This makes the design far more targeted than simple closed bottle or bucket traps without escape openings.

Easy to install in canisters or buckets

The plate measures:

It is suitable for installation in sufficiently large plastic surfaces, for example:

• Plastic canisters
• Plastic buckets
• Bucket lids
• Plastic boxes
• other suitable collection containers

For installation, all that is needed is to cut a suitable opening into the container. The trap plate is then placed on top and secured.

This allows you to make your own trap for Asian hornets in just a few simple steps.

Ideal for beekeepers and apiaries

A sturdy solution that is easy to inspect is especially important at apiaries. The mounting plate allows the use of larger collection containers that can be opened, cleaned and reused with ease.

Particularly practical is the installation:

• directly into a canister
• into the side of a plastic container
• into the lid of a horizontal bucket
• into other suitable plastic containers

This allows the trap to be individually adapted to the available location.

Reusable solution

Instead of having to buy a special container for every trap, existing plastic canisters or buckets can be used.

This saves material and makes it possible to set up several traps with different container sizes.

After use, the trap plate can be removed, cleaned and used again.
